Foundation garmets

I am so tired of buying undergarments that are not made well and don't last as long as I think they should.  I looked at several videos on you tube last night about making my own panties.  Today I took an old worn out pair and made a pattern.  I widened the crotch and added 1/2 inch from crotch to waist.  I used material I already had so they are not fancy.  I wanted to see if I could make a pair that fit before I buy any thing fancy.  I used a shirt that was in the donation bag and foe (fold over elastic) I had from when I thought my daughter was going to use cloth diapers and was going to make some for her.
I was quite excited because both the pattern making and the actual sewing of the panties was quite easy.
The next pair I make I will use t-shirt material.  I found a couple of them in the donation bag as well.
Over all I am very pleased with how they turned out.

  1. That's wonderful! Good for you! I'm impressed. I used to make panties, years ago. I had/have a pattern from Kwik Sew. It uses the soft lingerie elastic, but using the fold over elastic is a brilliant idea! Here is a link for the kind of pattern I used. It is not for adults, but they had various sizes for children. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kwik-Sew-220-Girls-Panties-Underwear-Sizes-2-4-6-New-Uncut-Sewing-Pattern-/111012056407?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d8d58d57

  3. I ended up making three pairs the first day and two the next. I dont like the pair in the picture. The fabric doesnt stretch or breathe so I tossed them. I made the other four out of t-shirts and love them. Now I know why my store bought panties were so uncomfortable. The crotch was too narrow. I like full coverage and my home sewn panties fit like a glove. I could not be more pleased. No more store bought for me. Now to see how long they last compared to purchased panties.
I thought about buying the elastic made just for panties but I like how easy the foe is to use that I might just stick with that. No one is going to see them anyway. If I am happy with them then thats what counts.

  4. I just looked at that page and thats pretty much how I made my panties Yolanda. I am thinking I dont need to buy patterns as long as a person has an old pair I can use to make a pattern.
Now my hubby wants me to make him some. I will research making men underwear next.
Its funny. Jeff wants me to make him some and the girls think its wierd to wear home made panties. I bet they come around.

  5. That IS funny. Good for him. I would think cotton/poly boxers would be easy. I wonder if there is a pattern for briefs somewhere. I'm proud of you!
